Gary R. Saterbak, Principal
Mr. Gary Saterbak brings over 30 years of experience in investment, capital management, due diligence, real estate development, management and opportunity structuring. Gary’s expertise includes fund creation, project sponsorship, and asset management tailored to partnership objectives.
Before founding Bear Holdings Group in 2000, Gary was affiliated with the Capital Management division of The Barone Group LLC, a San Diego based company with holdings in hospitality, multi-family, transportation and biotech. Primary activities included The Barone Group’s acquisition and business plan execution of its real estate based ventures. The $130M Resort at Tanamera in Reno, Nevada, is a highlight of those efforts.
From 1993 through 2002, Gary served as partner and Director of Project Development for Gough & Gough, Inc., a nationwide multi-family developer. During his nine-year tenure, Gary was instrumental in the entitlement, financing and development of extremely complex projects worth over $500 million, including mixed use and multi-family properties. Projects ranged from new construction to historic adaptive urban re-use. Highlighted transactions include the assemblage of 53 properties financed as the largest cross-collateralized FHA insured tax exempt bond issuance in California at its time.

From 1982 to 1992, Gary’s partnerships acquired sites and entitlements for developments that included commercial, industrial, mixed use and over 2,300 multi-family apartments throughout Southern California.
Gary started his first company, G.R Saterbak Design – later Saterbak-Kirby Design Services – in 1978. The company provided land planning, architectural and entitlement services for clients across California.
Industry Awards & Accolades
Gary has been recognized by the American Institute of Building Designers as a Professional Building Designer, and has received numerous awards for his public and private design work. Gary’s projects have also been featured in numerous publications. He received his Residential-Elderly Administrator certification for the State of California in 2009. Gary is also a licensed real estate professional.
His community interests include the origination of the La Jolla Shores Children’s Playground and founding support for the Coronado Community Schools Foundation Library web portal.
